The Santa Fe Distinguished Lecture Series brings world class scholars and writers for talks on issues ranging from antisemitism to Jewish life and history with its cultural and geographic diversity. Due to the generousity of the donors these talks are free and open to the public, based on the belief that learning is essential to creating a better world.

The History

The Santa Fe Distinguished Lecture Series is a program of the Institute for Tolerance Studies, a 501-c-3 organization established in 2005 by Ron Duncan Hart and Gloria Abella Ballen with the assistance of Ira Schlezinger and Fa Abrantes-Pais. An early version of the Lecture Series  was started in 2007 in Oklahoma City and later renewed in Santa Fe.   Helene Harpman and Misha Klein among others were important collaborators with the early lectures in Oklahoma City.

As the offices of the Institute for Tolerance Studies were moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Yehuda and Nurit Patt collaborated as we produced the initial live lectures in 2018 and 2019. Camilla Mandler, Pat Shapiro, and Carmen Rodriguez also provided crucial assistance. After the Covid pandemic stopped live programming in 2020, we changed to an online format for all programs, including the Distinguished Lecture Series webinars, the online library, and the the Jewish Learning Channel online.

In recent years the support of donors in Santa Fe and across the United States has permitted us to transform the Distinguished Lectures from a local series of lectures to an international online lecture series with leading international scholars and an audience that spreads from Australia across the United States and Canada to the U.K. and Israel.

Bonnie Ellinger, Marcia Torobin, and others have been important collaborators as we transformed the lecture series to the new programming format. We appreciate the collaborators who have contributed time and effort to make the Lecture Series successful.

The Jewish Learning Channel is another online program of the Institute for Tolerance Studies with more than 170 videos on Jewish life and history that are open to the public for the joy of learning. The Distinguished Lecture talks are recorded and available on the Learning Channel. With 1,300 subscribers and 10,000s of viewers the Jewish Learning Channel is a popular online venue for Jewish learning.

Thank you to the donors this year who have contributed
to make these programs free and open to the public.
